While I wouldn't describe this novel as "haunting," it's another great read.Many authors get lost in over-description. While this brings plenty of it, it's not simple window dressing here, there is always a connection, something which moves the story forward or brings us closer to knowing Mirielle more deeply.The touches of humor to such a dark subject are delightful and perfectly placed, brought on by the secondary characters. Which means the supporting cast isn't left to secondary status. They are all three-dimensional characters adding to the flow and arc of the story.Without spoilers, this ends exactly as you expect. What is unexpected is the path the character takes to getting there.This third novel by Skenandore places her in that special class of authors who I will read no matter what. This book is based on the real Carville leper colony in Louisiana. My knowledge was limited prior to reading this one. Regardless, the main character is frustrating and an emotional wreck, who finds that life is not based on material things, yet relationships.
