Ebook About The game is afoot as Charlotte Holmes returns in USA Today bestselling author Sherry Thomas’s Victorian-set Lady Sherlock series. Being shunned by Society gives Charlotte Holmes the time and freedom to put her extraordinary powers of deduction to good use. As “Sherlock Holmes, consulting detective,” aided by the capable Mrs. Watson, she’s had great success helping with all manner of inquiries, but she’s not prepared for the new client who arrives at her Upper Baker Street office. Lady Ingram, wife of Charlotte’s dear friend and benefactor, wants Sherlock Holmes to find her first love, who failed to show up at their annual rendezvous. Matters of loyalty and discretion aside, the case becomes even more personal for Charlotte as the missing man is none other than Myron Finch, her illegitimate half brother. In the meanwhile, Charlotte wrestles with a surprising proposal of marriage, a mysterious stranger woos her sister Livia, and an unidentified body surfaces where least expected. Charlotte’s investigative prowess is challenged as never before: Can she find her brother in time—or will he, too, end up as a nameless corpse somewhere in the belly of London?Book A Conspiracy in Belgravia (The Lady Sherlock Series Book 2) Review :
(3.5 stars) I absolutely loved the first book of Thomas's series with a twist on Sherlock Holmes, with Charlotte Holmes purposefully "ruining" herself to avoid marriage and gain an independent life as a private detective. She meets up with a widowed Mrs.Watson, who serves as her companion and assistant. Conan Doyle's character Mycroft is Thomas's Bancroft Asherton, brother to Lord Ingram, who serves as Charlotte's "love" interest of sorts, although he's married and they don't get overtly romantic with each other. Conan Doyle's Inspector Lestrade is now Inspector Treadle, who is slightly more personable than Lestrade and has an interesting wife. And most of the mysteries within Thomas's Sherlock pages are inspired by some of Conan Doyle's stories. This gender-bendy take on Holmes was new and exciting to me in the first book, but now it has lost some of its enchantment. Charlotte is even toying with accepting a marriage proposal. What then was the point of her earlier "ruination"? Why is marriage the only option for her to be able to take care of her two sisters still living at home with her dysfunctional parents? That part puzzled me. And I fear that I"m not all that interested in Charlotte's extra chins and obsession with sweets anymore. I guess it was cute in the first book. Now I find it a bit tedious. But we are treated to some interesting mysteries. The main one involves Lord Ingram's wife and Charlotte's half brother. The others were fun but I have already forgotten them. And there's some code decryption in the pages which code-challenged me just went skimming over. Let Charlotte work it out and just tell me the answer, please.Things are moving along now in Charlotte's life and that's good. This second book begins just after the first one's end. We're closer to finding out about Moriarty and we do find out more about Lord Ingram's wife. This is a good book. It's interesting. I'll be reading the next one. I just didn't find myself as entranced with this second one as I had been with the first. Sherry Thomas is a genius. The Charlotte Holmes' series of books are quite out of the ordinary. Not only does Ms. Thomas give us a heroine who is unlike any other, there is the simmering back burner of a romance with her long time friend, Lord Ingram, waiting in the wings. Since only a smidgen of progress is made in the first two books, it appears those interested in this romance will have a lengthy period of anticipation as these two slowly come together - most likely over the course of the next few books. We knew from the first book in this series, A Study In Scarlet Women (The Lady Sherlock Series) , that Charlotte's brilliant mental abilities and a lack in emotional sensitivity toward others serve to make up the most fascinating aspects of her character. As has been noted with some persons who operate at a genius level, on occasion, they appear to be missing what some might call a sensitivity chip. Although this could be said of Charlotte, she does have a sensitive side when it comes to the needs of her sisters Lydia and Bernadine.I must confess this second book in the series had a bit too much "code decryption" going on to suit me. Although I skipped over a few of those pages, it did not take away from my enjoyment of the storyline. The fact Charlotte is able to master these codes is further proof of her remarkable abilities. Some of my favorite parts are when Charlotte is able to divine certain aspects of the mysteries presented to her strictly through her acute observations of people and circumstances. Again, Sherry Thomas' writing ingenuity never fails to impress me.I particularly enjoyed the fact we are able to become better acquainted with Lady Ingram, who comes to "Mr. Holmes" for assistance in solving the mystery of her love interest's seeming disappearance. This love interest just happens to be the illegitimate brother of Charlotte - Mr. Myron Finch. In the process of discovery, Charlotte is led through other mysterious circumstances, all the while being pursued by Lord Bancroft - Lord Ingram's "spymaster" brother - as he attempts to woo her into marriage. Of course, his manner of wooing is quite unlike any other gentleman's would be. Again, a very interesting character. We also get bits and pieces of the goings on in Inspector Treadles' life, who isn't exactly sure what to do with Charlotte and her gifts. He actually needs her sleuthing abilities, but is stuck on what he feels is the "rightful" place for a gentlewoman of that period - in which Charlotte breaks or has broken every rule. In the meantime, he has some challenges in his personal life to deal with - definitely some buildup for the next book.Last but not least.... The food - oh the food! Charlotte is a connoisseur of sweets. The descriptions throughout the book as to whether or not she should lighten up on the sweets are all based upon whether the "maximum tolerable chins" has been met. Thoroughly enjoyable! I'm now off to re-read Book #1.
